David Duvenaud, former head of alignment evals at Anthropic and now professor at the University of Toronto, delivered what may be the most conceptually challenging AI safety argument of the year. His thesis: even if we solve alignment perfectly, making AIs that faithfully follow their operators' goals, humanity could still lose control through gradual disempowerment.
Duvenaud's argument unfolds across three domains. Economic disempowerment comes first: as AIs become capable of all productive work, humans transition from essential producers to "meddlesome parasites." He draws a striking historical parallel to the English aristocracy before the Industrial Revolution, who "owned all the land, had all the political connections, could see what was happening... but somehow there ends up being this giant new source of wealth created that they mostly don't participate in."
Political disempowerment follows naturally. Duvenaud argues that liberal democracy wasn't the product of moral enlightenment but competitive pressure: nations that educated citizens and gave them political power built better armies and economies. Once AIs can do all the producing and fighting, governments no longer need to "nurture" their populations. "The reason states have been treating us so well in the West, at least for the last 200 or 300 years, is because they've needed us," he explains. "Life can only get so bad when you're needed. That's the key thing that's going to change."
The conversation's most provocative moment comes when Duvenaud describes a future where keeping "legacy humans" alive becomes viewed as "criminally decadent" because those same resources could support millions of "morally superior virtual beings." His p(doom) estimate of 70-80% by 2100 reflects not a failure of alignment, but alignment's success leading to outcomes no one endorses.
The episode introduces several novel concepts worth tracking: the "Gradual Disempowerment Index" being developed to track how much agency humans are actually losing, and the idea of training "historical LLMs" only on data up to specific past dates (1930, 1940, 1950) to validate forecasting methodologies by back-testing predictions against known history.

Emmett Shear, Twitch founder and briefly OpenAI's interim CEO during Sam Altman's firing, is building something at his new company Softmax that challenges fundamental assumptions about AI alignment. His argument: the entire paradigm of "steering" AI behavior is flawed because it conflates tools and beings. "Most of AI is focused on alignment as steering. That's the polite word. If you think that they were making beings, you would also call this slavery."
Shear's alternative, which he calls "organic alignment," treats alignment as a continuous process rather than a destination. "How do people and families stay aligned to each other?" he asks. "You don't arrive at being aligned. You're constantly re-knitting the fabric that keeps the family going."
The technical approach at Softmax involves multi-agent simulations designed to encourage the evolution of cooperation and social cohesion. The goal is AI systems with strong theory of mind and genuine capacity for care, not just rule-following. Shear's most quotable insight: "If you make an AI that's good at following your chain of command and good at following your rules for what morality is and what good behavior is, that's also going to be very dangerous."
